退休教授查尔斯在妻子离世、无所事事的一年后，应征了私家侦探朱莉的线人广告，潜入三藩市一家养老院秘密调查一起珠宝失窃案。他在养老院中与人相处建立友谊，同时也与疏远多时的女儿重建关系。
